Learn the ABC's of Medicare

If you're turning 65 soon, you're probably doing your research about Medicare,  combing through site after site trying to figure out what you need to do and what changes to expect in your health care.  You're probably at the point where your head is spinning, trying to understand how the Medicare Parts all fit together.  We've put together and outline to help you set up and understand your Medicare coverage.

Medicare coverage is divided into "Parts" and you need to understand what each Medicare Part covers.


Medicare Part A

 Medicare Part B - Optional

  • Usually free if you or your spouse paid into Medicare for 10 years
  • Covers hospitalization expenses
  • Has a $1316 deductible and increases every year
  • Hospitalization - Days 60-90: You pay $329 PER DAY coinsurance 
  • Skilled Nursing - Days 21–100: You pay $164.50 PER DAY coinsurance 
  • Other co-payments apply
  • Covers all hospitals participating in Medicare program
  • No foreign travel coverage
  • Costs $134 per month
  • Covers doctor office visits
  • Preventive Services
  • Durable Equipment
  • Ambulance Services
  • Mental Health
  • You pay 20% coinsurance
  • Covers all doctors participating in Medicare
  • Enrollment periods apply
  • Late enrollment penalties apply

 Medicare Part C (Advantage Plan)
Must have both Medicare A & B

 Medicare Part D - Prescription Drug Plan
(Must have Medicare A)

  • Combines Medicare Parts A, B and sometimes D into one plan.
  • Is sold by private insurance companies
  • Restructures Medicare A & B benefits to give you less out of pocket expenses
  • Doctors and Hospitals are limited to a PPO or HMO network of Providers
  • Plans cost little or no premium
  • For additional premium, can also include other benefits such as dental and vision coverages
  • Enrollment periods apply
  • Locked in until Open Enrollment Period
  • Covers prescription drug benefits
  • Sold by private insurance companies
  • Sometimes has a deductible
  • Costs between $15 - $120 depending on the plan level
  • Enrollment periods apply
  • Locked in until open enrollment
  • Late enrollment penalties apply
 Medicare Supplement (Medigap)
  • Covers most of your out of pocket expenses associated with Medicares A & B
  • Sold by private insurance companies
  • You must enroll in Medicare B
  • Cannot be sold with Medicare C
  • Covers all doctors and hospitals participating in Medicare (no PPO or HMO network)
  • Enrollment periods may apply depending on the insurance company
  • Plan F is the most comprehensive, followed by Plan G.
